Webpen
September 2
In the fall of 2005, I was learning Ruby on Rails and about to compete in NaNoWriMo again, so I wanted an application that I could use to organize my thoughts, characters, and plot points. A few other writers wanted the same thing, so I sat down to create such an app.
I think I had the preliminary scaffolding and basic functionality finished in just a day or two, and the rest of the (then) pre-alpha project was fleshed out over the next month or so, until NaNo got in the way in November. After NaNo was over (with a second completion/win for me), I began to work on the app again, overhauling some areas and adding in a few new features that had been planned and/or asked for. 2006 saw the release of the beta version and a basic halt in production.
Webpen currently supports a user’s ability to create characters, places, objects, and events, all of which can be skimmed and searched using folksonomy tags. The user can also create snippets of text and overall stories, which are used to track common elements. A story also consists of a word goal, to provide the user with an idea of how much further they have to go, if they’re working on something like a NaNovel.

My wife has had a web site for as long as I’ve had EYEHEARTZOMBIES. When she was about to graduate from college, she wanted her own domain name and we thought of The August. In part, it’s just a neat name. Secondly, she’s born in August, so it’s fitting.
I created her site using her input and sketches and color choice. The photos on the top are all ones that she has taken with her Lomo cameras. She also designed the title text. The repeating patterns are from Squidfingers and the rest of the design is all from me. Her site is run on the Textpattern CMS, which was modified in places to produce the desired output.

About 6 months ago, a friend and I decided to start a punk, hardcore, and metal podcast. We wanted it to be hard and heavy and kind of tongue-in-cheek when it came to death and destruction and such. Almost a parody in the look and style of it.
We started The Blood Custom using iChat and Garageband to record our episodes and published on our web space using Loudblog, an open source solution based, in part, on Textpattern. We published 5 episodes, then put the project on hiatus due to school and family restraints.
I created the site in a day, using stock photography and Photoshop. Over the next month or so, I put the items in the store together. They’re all somewhat basic since I didn’t know just how much intricacy CafePress was capable of. Also it was my first time doing any sort of “fashion” design. The merchandise was all created in Photoshop and Illustrator.
