Sleep-deprived
September 30
Car pulls up to McDonald’s drive-thru lane, third or fourth in line
SHE: What do you want to get?
HE: Uh. A bacon, egg, and cheese McGriddle.
SHE: OK. Drink?
HE: Orange juice.
A few seconds pass. Car pulls forward one spot
SHE: What did you want?
HE: A #9 (_a bacon, egg, and cheese McGriddle_)
SHE: Oh. What do you want to drink?
HE: An orange juice.
A few more seconds. Now they’re at the window
VOICE: Welcome to McDonald’s. What can I get you?
SHE: Uh. I need two number… (_turning to HE_) what number?
HE: Nine.
SHE: Two #9s.
VOICE: What would you like to drink with those?
SHE turns to look at HE, inquiringly
HE: Orange juice
SHE: Orange juice for both.
SCENE ENDS
Yeah, that was us on the ride home this morning.
Freakin awesome. Kinda like that whole lemmings thing, eh?

I sure hope you two made it home safely… Geez, being that tired, it’s amazing you didn’t forget what to do at red light. And I read on your wife’s site that it took SIX hours to create the PDFs along with a few other steps. Don’t tell me that the majority of the time is spent creating the PDFs. If that’s the case, then that’s absolutely crazy. I used to have to print and distill to PDF all the time in my former job and I don’t ever remember it taking that long. Even on large manuals.

Yeah, six hours. There are 4 11×17-inch pages per section. Each page contains a number of ads, images, and articles. Each section gets printed to a postscript file. The ps files come out to around 50mb each and take about 20 – 30 minutes to create. Then I drop each section into Acrobat Distiller. If I have Distiller focused, it takes 10 – 15 minutes to distill; if not, it’s around 30 (needless to say, I keep it as focused as often as possible). Then I drop sets of four or five into folders that go into DropStuff, which takes about 8 or more minutes to create a .sit file. That gets transfered to another computer (about 10 minutes), which then FTPs the files to the printer (about 30 minutes). Then we call the printer, make them check the files (another 10 minutes or so), then we go home.
That’s assuming everything goes smoothly. I had to reprint a few sections and re-PDF one, so that adds on a lot of time.

I feel the pain. I’m still at work on Friday past seven for last-minute promotional work that goes on our main site. At least I don’t have to deal with a printer, though.
Or Distiller for that matter…
Six hours is ridiculous. I’d be dead to the world, too, after that.

Freaking awesome site!

Well, Clint, I’m glad you like it!

Like it? Hell man, I love it! I wish that I was half the web designer that you are. As you will notice, most of my sites are template designs but that is just until I learn some actual mad skills like CSS and the intricacies of Photoshop.

Clint If you want/need any help/pointers, feel free to AIM or email me. You can email me using the contact page on this site. I plan on writing some design/graphics how-tos on this site eventually…but we all know how eventually works. :)
