Sleep-deprived
September 30
Car pulls up to McDonald’s drive-thru lane, third or fourth in line
SHE: What do you want to get?
HE: Uh. A bacon, egg, and cheese McGriddle.
SHE: OK. Drink?
HE: Orange juice.
A few seconds pass. Car pulls forward one spot
SHE: What did you want?
HE: A #9 (_a bacon, egg, and cheese McGriddle_)
SHE: Oh. What do you want to drink?
HE: An orange juice.
A few more seconds. Now they’re at the window
VOICE: Welcome to McDonald’s. What can I get you?
SHE: Uh. I need two number… (_turning to HE_) what number?
HE: Nine.
SHE: Two #9s.
VOICE: What would you like to drink with those?
SHE turns to look at HE, inquiringly
HE: Orange juice
SHE: Orange juice for both.
SCENE ENDS
Yeah, that was us on the ride home this morning.
Yes, it’s deadline again. God, I hate this. It’s the worst part of this job. Boss said he didn’t want us working any more all-nighters, but here I am at 5:00 a.m. Oh well. At least I get paid for it.
Well, the redesign is going slowly but surely. So far the blather and music sections are restyled. The reworking is going kind of slowly for a few reasons. One, I’m trying to clean up my Textpattern forms, page templates, and styles from the previous 3 or 4 versions (which involves a lot of new forms and cross-checking of older ones to make sure they’re not going to be used anywhere). Two, work has gotten in the way lately, as it is, as I mentioned before, deadline. That tends to usurp a few days. Three, I’m reworking the way a few of the sections work. For instance, you’ll now be able to comment on the weekly MP3s.
We’re going to take tomorrow (well, today…whatever) off, so maybe I can spend a good chunk of the afternoon slogging through all of this and get another section or two working and looking like I want.
If any of you haven’t seen it yet, Elaine’s site has finally gotten built to a state of usefulness. I still have a few things to finish on it (the menu and a few sections), but it’s more than usable and readable. So, go use and read it! Leave her comments on her pretty Lomos.
I don’t think I’ll write a dissertation tonight, as I’m getting pretty sleepy and it’s probably a good idea to just let the computer compile the PDFs and get finished so we can go home and sleep. So, until awaker times.
Time in Malta
September 26
Here’s a track for a band I heard on a sampler this summer. Great band, and the album this song is from is even better than I expected. The band is Time in Malta and the song is Bare Witness
Tired Much?
September 22
I know, I know. I haven’t written in quite awhile. Oh well, I don’t care. I don’t have a good reason and I don’t care to invent one. 10 days isn’t that long. Anyway, here’s what’s going on.
Nothing.
Well, not really nothing. Just nothing of any great interest. Elaine and I are still working on her site, which just needs a few layout tweaks and it’ll be finished. As for my redesign, I’m rethinking the menu and a few other elements, and then it’ll be finished. I’d also love to be able to get sIFR to work, but that seems nigh impossible with Textpattern. Granted, I haven’t tried the newest version yet, but I’m not expecting any miracles.
Hopefully I’ll have a few big announcements about Gigantuan in the next week or so, but no promises there, as usual. I’m really starting to get frustrated with not having that up and running. It’s what I want to do with my life and it seems I keep getting bogged down in pointless stuff like artwork. I mean, I know the identity of the company is über-important, but I can’t help but think work is more important, especially at this point in the company’s life.
Manny is still in Europe (his travel blog. It’s funny how much I used to talk to him on AIM. Now I’m stuck talking to Ray and some other people. Manny needs to hurry back!
No. Don’t get me wrong, Ray’s a great guy to talk to. I’ve met a lot of awesome people off the Textpattern forums and I don’t mind talking to any of them. Manny was just fun to harrass about all sorts of stuff. Maybe I should just start picking on Ray and Damelon more. Yeah, that’s what I’ll do.
I think I’ve mentioned enough people in this post, don’t you? :)
Well, Elaine’s mom and brother got back from California this past week. They went out to visit her half-sister and half-brother and their dad. Her mom brought back some great pictures and stories. We can’t wait to get to go see everyone. Man, I wish we could travel more.
Poly and Finnegan haven’t had anything new or exciting happen to them, except that Poly has been killing things…or at least finding dead things. Elaine said she brought a mole or vole up to her this morning. I really hope she’s just finding dead things and not killing them herself. I don’t want a murdering dog.
In Linux news, I’ve installed GNOME and used it for a week or two, but it’s just too constricting compared to KDE. I think I’ve tried almost every popular enviroment/manager on Linux and so far nothing beats KDE. The others are just too hard to configure, too restricting, or just full of pointless features. Oh well, I’m pretty happy with KDE, so I’ll just stick to it.
Wow, I can’t really think of anything else to blather on about. Oh, if you haven’t read any of this serial novel that Max has linked a few times, you need to. It’s freaking awesome. So far I’ve read books one and two and I can’t wait to get into book three. The storyline is actually pretty original (not the easiest thing to do with zombies) and has enough twists and turns to keep me reading. So, go check it out now, since this post is finished.
Tom Waits
September 19
Double Feature
Yes, it’s another double feature. Tom Waits has been around forever it seems. He’s been releasing music and albums since the mid-70s. His early stuff is nice and friendly (like the first song listed below) and his more recent stuff is very whiskey bar-ish. I love his voice and the fact that he can play every instrument known to man! So, before next Sunday, get Please Call Me, Baby and Bad Liver and a Broken Heart
Changes on the Wind
September 12
I know, I know. I should just build the damn site and stick with it. I can’t do it, though. I just can’t. It’s some strange need that I can’t resist; I have to redesign. It’s not finished yet, but it should be in a week or two. I still haven’t planned out how some areas/sections are going to work or if they’ll even be there any longer. No content should be lost, but I may do away with the portfolio section that never had anything in it and a few other small changes. It’s going to be a very distressed layout, inspired in no small part by the Wicked Worn tutorials from Cameron Moll.
Well, the changes are coming, so I’ll leave it at that. Not much has changed around here. We’re still looking for a house to buy. Haven’t had any other problems with the landlord or anything. We also haven’t mowed, as I said we wouldn’t. Hopefully we’re out of this house in a month or two so we can start using our money for something important and not a rent payment.
I picked up a copy of Dance Dance Revolution and two dance mats this past week on Ebay. We’ve been playing for 10 - 15 minutes each night for the past few nights. It’s fun and a good workout. You feel really stupid at first, but then you realize that most other people really suck, too, and that no one playing with you has time to watch you suck as they’re too busy trying not to suck at the same time. We’re getting less sucky, though, at least at a few songs.
Sometimes I really wish our lives were more exciting, but they’re not.
