Just for fun, here’s the lyrics to the HORSE the band song, Cutsman from the album R. Borlax.

Monday, June 21st

This weekend was fun. Those of you involved in it will already know what happened, and those of you not, probably aren’t that interested. We got to see John and he and I stayed up ’til 2 a.m. playing Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. It’s so much more fun when you have a tank. He also showed us a couple of new anime shows from Japan. Well, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex isn’t really new, but Bakuretsu Tenshi is, at least for us. I rented Tony Hawk’s Underground as well, but I haven’t gotten to play it much. It’s pretty fun and it definitely beats the older ones.

Thursday, June 24th

I started writing this post on Monday while I was finishing up stuff at work. Well, when I last woke up, it was Wednesday, the 23rd of June. Yes, that’s right; it’s deadline again. It’s currently around 4 a.m. and I’m sitting here waiting on files to print to PostScript documents so I can drop them into Adobe’s Acrobat Distiller. Then I have to check each of the PDFs to make sure everything is there, then I stuff all the files into a couple of .sit files and FTP them all down to Dallas, TX to the printer. I know I’ve talked about this before, so I won’t go into any more detail.

Elaine is currently asleep on the couch in a co-worker’s office. I’m sitting here alone listening to From Autumn To Ashes and trying to stay awake. I’m also trying to remember all that I was going to say about getting used to things in my life. I remember some of it, but there’s more now than there was; and less in a few places.

The good sides of it are that I’m getting more and more used to how stuff that I use works. I’m learning all the little functions of Textpattern so I don’t have to click the help buttons or go to the forum everytime I have a question. I’m also getting more and more used to my computer at home. I’m beginning to get back into the power user mode I was in on Windows. Of course, I’m no where near the level of efficiency I was at on Windows or even on a Mac. Well, maybe compared to a Mac; depends on the model, I guess. But I no longer blink or think twice about entering the terminal and issuing commands. I’m starting to take advantage of having scriptable programs and interaces. It’s getting to be more about the use and less about the method. This is good, I think.

The bad side doesn’t really even exist yet. I’m just worried that it will. I have this horrible, nagging feeling that somewhere along the way, Elaine and I are going to get used to this “get ahead; make more money” drive that we have to be in at this point just to survive and we’ll spend the rest of our lives trying to keep up with…_something_. I’m also afraid that if that happens, we’ll stop living our lives for the pleasure of being alive and being with each other and just live for what we can buy or the trips we can take. I never want to find myself enslaved, especially not to money.

I’m not that concerned about this, I suppose. I mean, I don’t lose any sleep over it. Some days are just worse than others and lately there have been a lot of worse days. I think I’m just getting old.

Been listening to a lot of new music lately, thanks to BitTorrent. I suggest you all check out the new album from Modest Mouse, Good News For People Who Like Bad News. It’s got some great catchy songs and melodies. It’s not exactly like their old stuff, but it’s not really different either. It’s a good summertime album.

No other bands come to mind (that I haven’t mentioned before), but I have a Weakerthans song stuck in my head. I’ll post up the lyrics and maybe you can find it online somewhere. Or, better yet, buy the album and enjoy it all the time.

So you don’t get to be a saint. Martyrs never last this long. Guess I’ll never be the one to defeat desire in a song. Here’s a marker, here’s my naked skin, our Exhibit A. Put a small x where I lost my way. All the actors broke their legs, and it’s too late to postpone. The producer’s getting high, and the audience went home. Smile and take your awkward bow. Turn and stumble off the stage. Let the rain be your applause, every encore soothe your rage. Squint with one eye, hum a show-tune, and wait for your ride to say, “Oh, that’s where you must have lost your way.” Megaphone in helicopters squel, “Hey, are you okay?” as searchlights circle where we lost our way. All our accidents went purposeful and fell, stripped of providence or any way to tell that our intentions were intangible and sweet. Sick with simplle math and shy discoveries, piled up against our impending defeat.

BENEDICTION by The Weakerthans. From the “Reconstruction Site” album.

Is anyone else kind of sick of all the reality TV that’s out there? I mean, I’m OK with some of the better stuff (_The Apprentice_, Last Comic Standing) but the sentimental “Will he find love?” crap just needs to go. First you had shows like Blind Date and Fifth Wheel and they were alright, but the new crap like For Love Or Money and Marry My Dad is just stupid. If your dad can’t find a date/spouse, that’s his problem; I don’t want to see it on television. And if you’re so worried that the person you marry is more concerned with your money than with you, don’t stick them on some stupid show where they’re constantly assaulted by money. Even worse than this is the new show (I say new, it might be a sequal) Ultimate Love Test. Couples that have problems in their relationships go on the show. Once there, they are seperated and half of them are taken off to a tropical island where they’re constantly tempted by members of the opposite sex. Meanwhile, their other halves are back at the show, getting video “messages” of the worst parts. Why do producers want to create a show that’ll just make people’s lives worse? One couple was on there for infidelity and as soon as they got apart, the island-bound one was flirting with other people. THEY’RE NOT GOING TO GET ANY BETTER! It’s just stupid.

On the same kick (and just as stupid), I got caught up in the madness that is The WB’s Superstar USA. It was a funny-enough show, and it wasn’t THAT mean. The whole idea of the show, if you haven’t seen it, was to take the worst singers they could find and tell them they were awesome. Then, over the course of the show, eliminate the…best…of the group, leaving the absolutely worst singer as the winner…then they’d reveal the hoax. Now, I’m thinking they say “You aren’t a good singer; in fact, we chose you because of how bad you are” and the person freaks out and kills someone. That would have been a great show with a great ending. Instead, they gave the prize to a girl who’s apparently too stupid to realize what the word “hoax” means and then bought her off with $100,000 and a recording contract. No fight, no anger, nothing. What a rip!

Anyway, just had to get that off my chest. I’m not a fan of reality television, but there’s noty anything else on non-cable television. Someday I’ll be able to afford cable or satellite and I won’t have to watch this mindless drivel.

This weekend was pretty nice. We went to Ardmore to see my parents and the remaining puppies. There are three left; all girls. They have very distinct personalities, too. The biggest one (the one we liked the best) is kind of easy-go-lucky and very passive. The medium one is very slick-haired like her mother and she is always off to herself investigating something. The third one, the smallest, is really aggressive. We’re still unsure if we’re going to take one of them or not, but it’s looking more and more like not. We’re just not really ready for another puppy yet and we’re not confident that these will work out very well with Finnegan and Poly. We’d hate to take one of these puppies, have it not adapt to our lifestyle and constantly fight with the other animals. So we think we’ll wait until we can afford to buy another pure-bred dog so we’ll pretty much know exactly how it’ll act and behave.

Well, this weekend saw a few additions to my collections. I picked up copies of Spirited Away and Big Fish while we were in Ardmore and when we got back, Tenchu: Return From Darkness was waiting for me in the mailbox. Also, earlier in the week, a late birthday present from John (not his fault. damn special orders!) finally came. It’s the Bomb the Twist EP (only has 6 songs, so, in my book, it’s an EP) by the 5.6.7.8’s. They’re the band playing in the club in Kill Bill vol. 1. Great, great band. Elaine and I have been listening to them at least once a day since they arrived. I also downloaded a new torrent of theirs, the album Teenage Mojo Workout, from punktorrents (you need to get this, John).

Speaking of music, I also downloaded another album by Funeral For a Friend and some other stuff that I can’t think of right now. I have some downloads going right now, too, that I hope finish and are as good as they seem to be. BitTorrent is evil!

Finished reading The Exorcist the other day and I’m going to start on The Godfather soon.

Also this weekend, Elaine finished my birthday cake, which she’s supposed to put up pictures of soon. I’ll be sure and link to ‘em when she gets ‘em up. It’s an awesome and tooth-rottening cake. A pound and a half of chocolate! Oh my!
